A level university calculations and ranking scoreHow to Calculate A Levels University Rank Points for Singapore? The International A Levels is conducted and assessed a little differently in Singapore compared to other parts of the world. For starters, subjects are divided into three levels of study: H1, H2, and H3, with the ‘H’ in each term signifying ‘Higher’.  The H1 level is generally equated to AS and the H2 Level to A2 (the whole A-Level). Subjects in H3 are for advanced students who are looking to gain early college credit; H3 isn’t available for all subjects in the curriculum.

How It Works

A Levels candidates seating for the examinations under SEAB select subjects from the three levels, H1, H2, and H3, with H3 being the most in-depth of all the courses. All subjects can be divided into two categories: knowledge-skills and content-based. A candidate is expected to take courses in a combination as follows:

different syllabi chemistry H2

  1. Three content-based H2 A Levels subjects
  2. One content-based H1 A Levels subject
  3. H1 General Paper
  4. H1 Mother Tongue Language
  5. H1 Project Work

Students with high academic standing can also choose to take an extra H1/H2 A Levels subject or up to two H3 subjects.

How to Convert Your A Levels Grades into the Singapore Rank Point System for University

If you’re looking to convert your existing A Levels grades into the grading system of Singapore, then the first thing you will need to become familiar with is their system of rank points. A student can achieve a maximum of 90 points to gain admission into a Singaporean university. The better the A Levels score, the better their chances of securing a place.

The first step in calculating a student’s rank points is converting their existing A Levels grades into the Singaporean equivalent. This can be easily achieved by following the table below:

Grade Marks H2 Rank Points H1 Rank Points
A 70-100 20 10
B 60-69 17.5 8.75
C 55-59 15 7.5
D 50-54 12.5 6.25
E 45-49 10 5
S 40-44 5 2.5
U 0-39 0 0

A student’s total rank points can be calculated both with, or without the H1 Mother Tongue Language module. Without the module, you calculate the sum of the following:

  1. The best four of the student’s content-based subjects (3 H2+ 1 H1) for the A Levels
  2. The H1 General Paper
  3. The H1 Project Work

Assuming a student has achieved perfect scores in all their papers, the maximum rank points they can obtain in this manner is:

Rank Points = 3 H2 + 1 H1 + 1 H1 (general paper) + 1 H1 (project)

= (20 +20 +20) + 10 + 10 + 10

= 90 total rank points

On the other hand, if a student happens to get a B in one of their H2 subjects and has an A everything else, the calculation would change and become:

Rank Points = 3 H2 + 1 H1 + 1 H1 (general paper) + 1 H1 (project)

= (20 +20) + 17.5 + 10 + 10 + 10

= 87.5 total rank points

Now, let’s repeat the same calculation, but this time by including the H1 Mother Tongue Language Module. The formula used to do this is:

Rank Points = [(3 H2 + 1 H1 + H1 GP + H1 PW + H1 MTL) / 100] x 90

So, if a student were to receive full marks in all of the modules, his total points would be calculated as follows:

= [(20 + 20 + 20 +10 + 10 + 10 +10)/100] * 90

= 90 Rank Points

Again, if the student were to instead receive a B in one of their H2 subjects and have an A in everything else, it becomes:

= [(20+ 20 + 17.5 + 10 + 10 + 10 +10)/100] * 90

= 87.75 Rank Points

As always, the higher the rank point for A levels, the better the chances of the student gaining admission into the university.

Rank Point Calculations for Students Taking H2 Content-Based Subjects

In the case, a student has 4 H2 A Levels subjects instead of 3 with one H1, the student’s weakest H2 subject will then be considered as their H1 content subject. This is done by halving the rank points of the H2 subject in consideration. For example, the calculation for a student who obtains highest marks in every subject and has 4 H2 content-based ones, is as follows:

Rank Points = 3 H2 + (Weakest H2)/2 + 1 H1 (general paper) + 1 H1 (project)

= (20 +20 +20) + (20/2) + 10 + 10

= 90 Rank Points

Thus, 90 is again the highest number of points a student can achieve for the A levels. In another scenario, if the student achieves a B in one of their four H2 content-based subjects, then this subject will now be considered as the weakest one. The calculation will then be as follows:

Rank Points = 3 H2 + (Weakest H2)/2 + 1 H1 (general paper) + 1 H1 (project)

= (20 +20 +20) + (17.5/2) + 10 + 10

= 88.75 Rank Points

And there you have it! Using this method, you can easily convert your A Levels grades into the rank point system for your application to a Singaporean University. There is one last thing that should be noted, and it’s the fact that H3 subjects are not included into rank point calculations. Since these subjects are studied on top of H1 and H2 ones, the H3 subjects can be used to obtain credit in the form of university courses instead.
